Scholarships in Italy for students of the Somali National University

Mogadishu. Last November, sixteen students of the Somali National University left Mogadishu for Italy, to attend annual master’s / professional master’s degree courses with academic recognition of the educational credits acquired, thanks to the scholarship program funded by the Italian Cooperation.

The scholarship program is part of the broader Italian support to university education in Somalia, started in 2014, and which saw the first graduation ceremony for one hundred and thirty students of the National University last June in Mogadishu, after more than twenty years of interruption due to the civil war.

Beneficiaries of this initiative are the most deserving students of the Somali National University, of the faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary, Law and Economics, who completed their studies in the first semester of 2019.

The management of the scholarships is entrusted to the universities that have joined the initiative: the Roma Tre University as leader (4 scholarship holders); the University of Bari (2 fellows); the University of Bologna (2 fellows); the University of Florence (4 fellows); the University of Trieste (4 fellows). These universities participate, together with the University of Pavia and the Polytechnic of Milan, in the broader project “Italian support for university training in Somalia”.

In addition to covering all the administrative and logistical costs for the stay of the fellows in Italy, the program may finance the participation in conferences, teaching material, expenses for the realization of applied research theses, as well as courses for learning the Italian language and / or English during the period of study in Italy.

As recently recalled by Deputy Minister Emanuela Del Re, who strongly wanted this initiative, it is also through university cooperation that the efforts for the rebirth of Somalia pass.
